box Original Indian Wars Era Model 1874 Second Pattern McKeever Cartridge Box.
Probably manufactured by the WATERVLIET ARSENAL. This particular cartridge box was made for the New Jersey State Militia and a brass plate was used on this example rather than the standard leather US embossing, take note: close examination will reveal that the NJ Plate has apparently been glued on. This efficient and very collectable box was designed to hold 20 rounds of government 45/70 in two rows of ten each, all 20 cartridge loops are intact, and ten rounds of 45/70 ammo are included. Made of black leather with a tool pocket indentation on one end, there is a brass finial on the closing tab. The two belt loops are stitched at the bottom and brass riveted at the top. All rivets and stitching are intact, but there is some use related cracking of the leather on the leather of the closing tab.
