musket Belgian M.1831 Infantry Flintlock rifled musket.
This was the first newly manufactured musket of the Belgian army after Belgium became independent in 1830. The right side of the butt stock displays a prominent cartouche (BV). There is a cartouche with the date (1832) and two initials (A R) on the left side of the butt stock. The lock plate displays a crown just in front of the hammer with JP and the number 39. The barrel tang has the LG (Liege Belgium) stamped marking. The stock is made of walnut and extends to within three inch of the muzzle. The left side of the butt stock is scooped out for a cheek rest. There is a socket bayonet lug on the barrel, near the muzzle. All iron furniture is complete with an original iron ramrod. The flint lock works great, main spring is strong, flint original, holder intact. The iron parts of the musket are covered by a uniform layer of brown patina, some minor surface rust on butt plate at the top. Good stock in original finish. Overall length: 57.25 inch. Barrel length: 42.25 inch. A very attractive and seldom encountered Belgian M.1831 (Dated 1832) flintlock rifled musket. Yes, it is rifled and the rifling is good. These muskets are difficult to find in original flintlock configuration, as most of them were converted to percussion configuration starting in 1838. The bayonet is also present, and has the L (Liege) stamp plus a hard to read 8 and a number 2 plus a prominent number 86 on the side of the socket. The bayonet adaptor ring is also present. The bayonet is very nice, and the musket is even better.
