WMI Western Military Institute Button.
This coat button is Albert's SU431. A nice coat button, dug in Virginia, it is sound with some gilt remaining. This is low convex, two piece construction with significant push in the front and shank bent slightly to the side but nonetheless a genuine Civil War button from a prestigious military school. The Western Military Institute was a preparatory school and college located first in Kentucky, then in Tennessee. It was founded by Thornton Fitzhugh Johnson in 1847, and initially located in Georgetown, Kentucky. Republican politician, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and Presidential Candidate James Blaine was an instructor there in 1850 and 1851. In 1851, future Confederate General Bushrod Johnson became a professor, and later served as headmaster until the beginning of the American Civil War. The Western Military Institute merged with the University of Nashville, and the campus was moved to that city. The combined school offered university and high school instruction to young men, the latter continuing to operate under the name Western Military Institute, though the controlling organization in the merger was the University of Nashville. Sam Davis, "Boy Hero of the Confederacy", attended the Western Military Institute from 1860 to 1861. The campus was located from 1855 to 1861 at 724 Second Avenue South, serves today as Metropolitan Nashville City Government's Planning Building, home to the Nashville Planning Commission. In 1867 the high school instruction of the University of Nashville, previously offered through the Western Military Institute was offered in the newly constituted Montgomery Bell Academy, which was housed in new facilities that are now the campus of the George Peabody College of Teachers at Vanderbilt University.

Hillsborough Hillsborough Military Academy Button.
This 19mm button is Albert's SU150 (Tice's NCS270 Am.1 "Schuyler. H.& G./ N. York" dm.) A nice button with some gilt remaining and an upright shank solid and intact. Hillsborough Military Academy; convex, two piece construction. Students attended the first classes at Hillsborough Military Academy in January 1859, and by the following year, 99 students were enrolled. Commanded by Charles C. Tew, a former faculty member at the Citadel and superintendent of the Arsenal Academy in South Carolina, the school was patterned after the U.S. Military Academy. Most of the faculty and cadets joined the Confederate Army at the outbreak of war. Charles Tew was killed in the Bloody Lane at Antietam while commanding the 2nd North Carolina Regiment. Just before the fall of Charleston, many cadets left the Academy without orders to join General Beauregard. To the cadets' dismay, recruiters would not enlist them due to their impetuous breach of cadet discipline. The residual Cadet Corps was disbanded just before General Johnston's Army capitulated in 1865. Scovill produced the buttons around 1859-1860. The device shows a five pointed star on a lined field with the prime point oriented downwards and "NC" at sides.
Item BU3004  $807.50

Virginia Button Virginia Staff Officers Button.
This button is listed in Albert's VA20, and Tice's VA261A.7. Virginia militia, general use; high convex, three piece. Variant "A" is probably the most widely produced and issued of all pre 1865 Virginia staff Commonwealth coat of arms buttons. Although common, it is a handsome, well executed button that most collectors covet. Type "C" is not scarce, but is seen far less than than the other examples. Its usage during the war is well documented. Similar to many period Steele & Johnson made Virginia buttons, the cartoon like Virtus figure is grotesque and disproportionate. It bears little similarity to the graceful and stylish figures portrayed on Scovill's VA225 and 261A.

This is a good, solid button in all respects, except that the shank, although intact, is broken away from the back, as shown in the photo. It is easily repaired, but I don't do that. The front is very nice. There is a crease along the front of the "I"; it was likely done during the manufacturing process. A decent and unusual Confederate button for your collection.
